Introduction

AI tools like ChatGPT have brought great potential to education, but they are often misused by students for plagiarism and bypassing genuine learning efforts. At UNAM, it’s crucial to implement a balanced approach that discourages misuse while encouraging productive AI use.

This project seeks to tackle the growing misuse of AI in academic writing among students at UNAM. With the rapid rise of AI tools capable of generating essays and research papers etc. there is an increasing concern about the erosion of academic integrity, the devaluation of critical thinking and the potential long term harm to student’s academic and professional development. Recommendations in this report seek to engage UNAM students as they work together on pressing policy issues that arise as Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used in education.

AI can be defined as “automation based on associations.” When computers automate reasoning based on associations in data (or associations deduced from expert knowledge), two shifts fundamental to AI occur and shift computing beyond conventional edtech: (1) from capturing data to detecting patterns in data and (2) from providing access to instructional resources to automating decisions about instruction and other educational processes. Detecting patterns and automating decisions are leaps in the level of responsibilities that can be delegated to a computer system. The process of developing an AI system may lead to bias in how patterns are detected and unfairness in how decisions are automated. Thus, educational systems must govern their use of AI systems, hence this report describes opportunities for using AI to improve education, recognizes challenges that will arise, and develops recommendations to guide further policy development.

  3. Thank you for this information. The use of AI in academic work can certainly help students gain marks, especially when AI tools generate well-structured responses quickly. However, the real danger lies in students simply copying and pasting these AI-generated responses without understanding the underlying concepts. This shortcut to academic success may result in immediate grades, but it deprives students of the deeper learning that comes from engaging with the material. Hence it’s very important we address this issue among students.
